距离贾平凹创作《废都》至今，已有近二十年矣，在这二十年间，小说《废都》历经了出版，争论，遭禁，获奖，沉寂，解禁，再版，再争论等等过程，在国内外社会各界对这部小说不断争论研究的过程中，始终有一个话题是研究者们都绕不开的，那就是《废都》的主题思想。主题思想是一部书的灵魂和脊梁，承载着这部作品全部的内容和精髓，而《废都》的主题思想就完全汇聚在“废”这个字上面，而全书却不是单纯的表达“废”的主题思想，在表面“废”的背后，我们看到了“废”的本质，看到了“废”的原因，虽然贾平凹先生没有在结局给出废都重建的道路，但是，重建的道路已经通过全篇的“废”话，清晰的展现在我们面前了。
