Abstract：Public sign translation is of significance in constructing and spreading the city image. This thesis takes Xuhzou City for example and studies the present situation of public sign translations and the negative impact of mistranslations on the city image. The study shows that public sign mistranslations mainly appear in the following aspects: Chinese-style English, fuzzy language in public sign translations and culture mistranslations. They are mainly caused by lack of standards of public sign translation, cultural differences and negligence in making public sign boards. Thus, the related department should strengthen management of public sign translation, governments should establish institutions, committee of experts and an open and good modified system, the translators should read and accumulate practical English materials and employ some translation strategies to eliminate mistranslations, which may enhance the soft cultural power of Xuzhou and promote international exchanges and cooperation in Xuzhou.

摘要：公示语翻译对城市形象的建设与传播有重要意义。本文以徐州市为例，研究了徐州市公示语的翻译现状及其误译对城市形象的消极影响。研究表明，徐州市公示语的误译主要表现在中式英语、公示语翻译中的模糊语、文化误译等方面，这主要是由于缺乏公示语翻译标准、文化差异以及制作公示语标牌时的失误等原因造成的。因此，有关部门应加强公示语翻译的管理；政府应建立专家委员会，建立公开良好的修正体系；译者应当阅读和积累实用的英语素材，并在翻译中使用一些翻译策略来消除公示语误译现象，以塑造徐州市的积极形象，增加徐州的软文化实力，从而促进徐州地区的国际交流与合作。
