Abstract

In the late 19th century, feminist movement began in the west and then flourished, influencing the whole world. As translation plays an important role in spreading thoughts, feminists combine the translation theory and feminism together and form a special translation theory and strategies with prosperous results, such as improving female status, making women’s voice heard, etc.

Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights is a novel with feminist features, such as distinct understanding of feminist consciousness, subversion of the traditional feminist images, etc. From the perspective of feminist translation theory, the paper conducts a comparative study on the two translated versions of Wuthering Heights, one translated by Yang Yi (female) and the other by Song Zhaolin (male), and analyzes fidelity, the subjectivity of the translators and the related translation strategies in terms of three aspects: language and gender description and aesthetic effects. The conclusion is that female translators are more sensitive to the feminist consciousness and their understandings are closer to the women writers. Meanwhile, they pay more attention to the use of feminist strategies so as to well demonstrate the original texts. Thus this paper hopes that translators can be aware of studying and applying them and then use them to guide the translation of feminist literary works.

Key words: Wuthering Heights; feminist translation; comparative study
