Abstract: This thesis is intended to investigate the use of common methods in translation of Chinese scenic spot names in order to find out existent problems in current translation. The first part is an introduction in which the writer briefly discusses the necessity of the study. The second part analyzes the functions of scenic spot name translation and the author points out the informative and vocative functions are both important. The third part probes into the characteristics of scenic spot names in which the author argues the cultural information and the concise language form should be paid attention to in translation. The forth explores common methods used in translation of scenic spot names. The author finds out there are four methods: transliteration, literal translation, paraphrase and analogy. Finally, there is a conclusion in which the writer points out the advantages and disadvantages of the methods and gives some suggestions to solve existent problems.
