Abstract:

Teachers have different beliefs about teaching. Grammar as a part of the English teaching, different teachers have different beliefs about grammar teaching. This study examines divergences in the grammar teaching of the three EFL teachers in Chengdu Shuang Qing Middle School. Three teachers were observed and interviewed about two and a half of months; the observations provided insights into divergences between their beliefs about grammar teaching and their classroom teaching. The study was guided by the primary questions, “What are the divergences between teachers’ beliefs about grammar teaching and classroom teaching?” and “What causes these divergences?”. This study also reviewed current literature to analyze the viewpoints of other beliefs about grammar teaching. The result indicated that there are four major different kinds of divergences. Drawing on the divergences, the analysis indicated the causes of those divergences. Finding these factors helps us to find more effective ways to help teacher approach grammar teaching. What’s more, it is also a valuable focus for both research and teacher development.
