INTRODUCTION

After World War I, German was faced with problems of compensating for the war, moving its citizens out of un-Germanic territory, economy crisis and national impotence. Nazi Party directed its spearhead at Jews and claimed that the Aryans was the master race, while Jews were inferior and should be eliminated. We are Witnesses is a book of five children’s diaries that record the Nazi war against Jews. It is in English and has not been translated into Chinese.

Character description and reproduction of children are my great interests, so I chose the 4th chapter—I Want to Live in We are Witnesses -- as the target of translation. The 4th chapter/diary was written by Eva Heyman, in which the author clearly presents the readers all the happenings in eight months from 1944-2-13 to 1944-10-17. Eva experienced nightmarish days after her 13th birthday. Her family’s possessions were confiscated, her families were taken away by police, then she was taken to the ghetto where she met with her young death shortly afterwards.

The author of the book presents the living condition of the 13-year-old little girl during Nazi Holocaust and shows Nazi Party’s brutality and ruthlessness through plenty of psychological description, dialogues and diaries. Readers also become witnesses after reading it. Eva, David, Moshe, Yitzhak and Anne didn’t survive, but their diaries have survived to make us know about the dark part of the history and to reveal to us some traces of human nature.
