INTRODUCTION

China Diary: The life of Mary Austin Endicott, is a book which records the life experience of author’s mother, written by Shirley Jane Endicott. Use the third person form when the author tidies up to write. Shirley Jane Endicott has presented us with a fascinating account of her mother’s life, based on Mary Austin Endicott’s private writings and flavored with Shirley’s memories. There are a large number of letters between her mother and other people. She brings to life the story of an exceptional woman whose life was shaped by profound political and historical circumstances.

My task is to translate chapter 22 to 24 of this book into correct Chinese. Three chapters Deciding to Work with Communists, Two Solitudes, and Heaven and Hell in Shanghai, 1947 indicates that Mary is affected by his husband who is committed to peaceful endeavors both in Canada and China. They almost spend their whole lives on cheering for the cause of peace of the Chinese people.

In chapter 22, Mary Endicott was especially impressed with the LPP national leader, Tim Buck. Then, her political standing changed a lot. Wanting to be even more informed, she attended LPP events and decided to work with communists.

In chapter 23, Mary and Jim took a vacation and returned to Canada. Because of the “War in the Pacific”, Mary didn’t come back to China along with Jim after the vacation. All the while separated from Jim and grieving for a broken marriage, she felt to be in jeopardy. Both sides had experienced a period of twists and turns, so were very eager to reunite. The long painful separation would soon be over. Mary and Jim reunited in Shanghai and made up for each other.

In chapter 24, with the joy of the reunion, Mary and Jim grew a deeper realization of the meaning of their love because of the suffering in their separation. However, Jim was diagnosed with a nervous breakdown. In the darkest period, Mary accompanied Jim and kept enlightening him. In order to improve Jim’s impaired health, she accompanied him to the political and social activities in Shanghai.
