Abstract:This study aims to deal with the theme of Pip’s growth in Great Expectations. The growth theme is conveyed from the perspectives of Pip’s characters and values of life.  At first, Pip is an innocent village boy, but under the influence of external temptations, he leaves hometown and enjoys a new life in London. But at the same time he loses his kindness and values of life.  After experiencing many ordeals, Pip finally achieves maturity. The paper also probes the causes of Pip’s growth. Joe, Magwitch, Estella and Herbert all have a role in the boy’s growth. Pip will not achieve a full understanding of life without these guides. He eventually realizes that conscience is more important than money or social status. The paper concludes that Pip’s growth offers a realistic picture of Dickens’s time.

Key Words: growth; Great Expectations; Dickens
