Abstract

Since the “cultural turn” appeared in the 1980s, translation studies and western feminism in culture studies have come into combination, which leads to the establishment of feminist translation theory. Feminist translation theory aims to eliminate the gender discrimination against women in translation studies and practices, redefine the relationship between original content and translation as well as the author and translator. Many feminist translators and theorists such as Susanne de Lotbiniere-Harwood, Sherry Simon and Luise Von Flotow contribute a lot to the development of feminist translation studies. Compared to the western countries, because of different social background, there’s no great feminist movement in China, so the feminist thought is not so profound.

The author tries to do a comparative study about psychological description in Pride and Prejudice translated by Zhang Ling and Sun Zhili respectively from the perspective of feminist translation theory, exploring whether translators’ feminist consciousness as well as gender consciousness will affect the translation.

The thesis consists of four parts. Chapter one begins with a brief introduction of the thesis. It presents the research background, objectives, significance, methodology. Chapter two provides a specific literature review of previous studies on feminist translation theory both at abroad and at home. This chapter will also give a brief introduction of Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice, two translators and their Chinese versions. Chapter three mainly makes a comparative study of the two Chinese versions to show the influence of feminist consciousness on the female translator. The last chapter draws a conclusion that the female translator Zhang Ling manifests stronger feminist consciousness in the translation process compared with the male translator Sun Zhili.
