Abstract

Jane Austen, as a female novelist, enjoys a great fame in Britain. Most of her works mainly focus on female’s life and marriage in the squire family. She depicts the small world around her with her nuanced observation and her lively and humorous expression. Pride and Prejudice is imbued with comic effects and enjoys a great popularity among Chinese readers. Irony is frequently used in Pride and Prejudice. This paper chooses two Chinese versions of Pride and Prejudice, one by Sun Zhili, the other by Wang Keyi for analysis. Some of the ironies are investigated regarding the translation strategies, including free translation and literal translation, amplification and omission, from the perspective of Functional Equivalence.
