In 1892 Wilde began an intimate friendship with Lord Alfred Douglas. As the two grew closer, family and friends urged Wilde and Douglas to lessen their contact. Douglas’s father, the Marquess of Queensberry often intervened in their friendship. Wilde sued Queensberry for criminal libel because of his endless insults. However Wilde was sentenced to jail. He was imprisoned in Pentonville, Wandsworth and Reading Prisons, and the poor food, manual labor and harsh conditions greatly weakened his health. He quickly began suffering from hunger disease. Wilde, still loving Lord Alfred, became upset as contact from him lapsed, then annoyed when he learned that Lord Alfred planned to publish his letters and dedicate poems to him unasked. And then Wilde was allowed to have writing materials in early 1897, but still under strict control. Wilde decided to write to Douglas. Wilde wrote the letter between January and March in 1897 during his imprisonment. He was not allowed to send the letter, but he wrote it for release. Nominally, the recipient of this letter is Douglas. Actually, it was written for implied readers. In the letter Wilde scanned his past, present and future; friends, the common people and society, sublimating his thoughts.
