Abstract:Thomas Hardy was one of the most famous and controversial realistic novelists of Victorian age. The novel of character and environment called “Wessex Novels” was the top of his art. Jude the Obscure was one of the most representative “Wessex novels”. This novel mainly described a realistic and enterprising rural youth named Jude and his tragic lifetime in studies, love and marriage. In order to help readers to have a better understanding of Hardy’s work, this paper tries to interpret the tragedy of the lower class people who live in Wessex by analyzing the tragedy of Jude in circumstances, love, marriage, academic and so on.

摘 要:托马斯·哈代是维多利亚时代最著名和最富有争议的作家，他的“威塞克斯”系列小说是其艺术的巅峰。而《无名的裘德》正是“威塞克斯”小说中最具有代表性的一部，小说主要讲述了一个求实、上进的农村青年裘德在学业、爱情和婚姻上的悲剧人生。本文通过分析裘德在境遇、爱情、婚姻、学业等方面的悲剧来解读生活在威塞克斯这一背景下的下层社会人的悲剧,以期能促进对哈代作品的研究。
