Abstract：Ernest Miller Hemingway (July 21, 1899 – July 2, 1961) is a famous American writer and journalist. The Old Man and Sea is the masterpiece of Hemingway. Since the publication of this novel, it rewards the praise of many literary critics both at home and abroad. In this context, the author studies the writer and his work on the basis of previous research. Though analyzing the situation of Santiago, it can explore Hemingway’s experience of difficulties, down time and his lonely struggle life. But he still fights with fate and struggles with failures difficulties. He reaches the peak of success under the great pressure finally. This paper illustrates a reflection between Santiago and Hemingway in The Old Man and the Sea. What Santiago has experienced is indeed Hemingway’s own life experience. Through such analysis the author hopes readers can make a better appreciation of The Old Man and the Sea and learn Hemingway’s fearless personalities and active attitude toward challenges and difficult life.

中文摘要：《老人与海》是20世纪美国作家海明威的代表作品。自问世以来，国内外许多文学评论家对之好评不断。本论文在前人研究的基础上，通过对海明威及其杰作《老人与海》的研究，着重通过分析《老人与海》中主人公桑提亚哥的境况。揭示小说中作者海明威历经的坎坷人生、沉寂时光、孤独的奋斗生涯，却同样坚持向命运抗，与失败进行挑战，勇于面对困难；并在重压和困难面前奋力攀行，最终到达了辉煌的顶峰。本文意在揭示桑提亚哥在小说中的沧桑经历，这其实是海明威自身人生奋斗的一个写照。作者期望读者学习海明威与困难斗争突显的巨大力量和勇敢无畏的英雄本色。学习他不畏艰险、勇于拼搏的精神。
