Abstract:Film translation is innately related to cross-cultural study, translating a text from one culture to another usually requires that a choice first be made between two basic translation strategies: domestication and foreignization. The initial decision between domesticating and foreignizing strategies affects the whole translation process. This paper aims to explore the possibility of combining the two translation strategies in translating the English film subtitles into Chinese. It is made up of four major parts; the first part will give an introduction of the development of subtitle translation. The second part states an overview of subtitling through history, classification and characteristics. The third part is about the understanding of subtitle translation and how the culture affects subtitle translation. The fourth part deals with a careful analysis of Domestication and Foreignization. The fifth part, the paper will state suggestions for subtitle translation. The last part is a conclusion of the paper. Subtitles in film help to preserve the original integrity, expressiveness and performance of actors and actress. Translated subtitles should serve the same function. It is necessary for us to consider the cultural differences so that we can avoid mistranslation. The two main translation strategies are not contradictory but complementary in view of cultural exchange in cross-cultural communication. Anyway, it is the ultimate goal for translators to make the subtitles fluent and intelligible to the target language audience. We should not only use either one of them, but using both in the text.

摘要:电影翻译与跨文化研究有着紧密的内在联系，从一种文化到另一种文化的转换需要我们在两种翻译策略－归化和异化上作出正确选择。而对这两种翻译策略的选择又将会影响到整个翻译的进程。本论文主要分为六个部分：第一部分介绍电影字幕翻译的发展；第二部分则是从字幕的历史，分类，特点，以及文化因素对字幕翻译的影响阐述字幕翻译的概况；第三部分是对字幕翻译进行概述并且讲述文化因素对字幕翻译产生的影响；第四部分是对归化与异化两大翻译策略的分析与比较；第五部分是对字幕翻译工作中翻译策略选择上的几点建议；第六部分是全文的概述和总结。为了防止文化差异所造成的翻译失误，我们应该把文化因素也考虑进去；归化与异化非但不矛盾，而且它还在跨文化交际中有着互补的关系。把字幕翻译的通顺易懂是译者的主要目标，因而我们应该因地制宜地选择这两种翻译策略而不是从它们二者中选一。
