Abstract: Abusive language is a part of language and a kind of linguistic phenomenon. Abusive language appears in both English and Chinese languages. It is not only used to convey messages, but also express one’s emotion. Animal abusive language is a significant part of abusive language. In terms of motivations and functions, similarities can be found. However, there are differences in word formation and part of speech. And different geographical locations, religions, histories and customs result in different cultural connotations and pragmatic meanings. Through contrastive study of English and Chinese animal abusive languages, the paper demonstrates the usages of animal abusive language and reflects the cultural differences and reveals the factors leading to the differences, aiming to provide a better understanding and help to develop greater ability in intercultural communication.
