Abstract:With the rapid development of information technology, improving the speed of inputting is one of requirements for network language. This study aims to investigate the rationality of the existence of network language abbreviations and the attitude we should take towards the defect of abbreviated words in network language. Investigations are carried out by the way of a comparison between the formation of the traditional abbreviations and the network language abbreviations, the analysis of the background which the network language develops, the research on the principle of linguistic economy and a discussion of the disadvantages and the advantage of the abbreviated words used in net chatting. The result shows that network language abbreviations follow the principle of linguistic economy. The main cause of its disadvantage is due to the special background it develops.
